MACKINTOSH WINDOW

The Final Illumination

The ultimate leaded window, carefully crafted to perfection, now graces the kitchen wall within a custom light box. This innovative installation allows the glass to be backlit, ensuring the intricate details of the window are visible throughout the day. Switchable at will, the final piece effortlessly introduces light and vibrant hues to the kitchen, enriching the space with character.

Leading the Way

The meticulous process of leading is well underway, with each piece snugly fitting into the heart of a lead, akin to a jigsaw puzzle. Straight lines prove more manageable than their curved counterparts, and the intricate Mackintosh roses demand extra attention and time. After leading and soldering around each glass piece, the entire creation has to be moved, a task that requires the coordination of four skilled individuals.

Navigating the Leading Process

Embarking on the leading process, cut glass pieces find their place on the pattern, bound together by the enduring embrace of lead. This age-old technique, cherished by stained glass artisans for centuries, relies on sturdy nails to hold the evolving masterpiece together during assembly.

Precision in Glass Cutting

The laborious task of cutting each glass piece to the precise pattern and grinding it to a perfect fit unfolds. Harmonizing colours to create a seamless flow becomes an enjoyable part of the design process. Utilizing a light box, the artist visualizes how the glass pieces unite, simulating their appearance in different lighting conditions.

The Art of Design

Following a thorough client discussion, a large-scale drawing materializes, reflecting the essence of the design. Inspired by the timeless work of Rennie Mackintosh, the artist delves into the intricacies of Mackintosh's roses and colour palette. The design, composed in four sections, incorporates hidden steel reinforcement within the leads, providing strength and cohesion to the entire piece.

Client's Vision

A blank kitchen wall awaits transformation, prompting a unique stained-glass feature to infuse colour and character. Drawing inspiration from renowned artists like Rennie Mackintosh, the client's vision is to introduce bold and vibrant hues into the room. The placement of the piece in a light box, strategically near an existing power source, is a thoughtful touch that enhances both aesthetics and functionality.
