A client approached me to bring natural light into a dim lounge — but with one challenge: the window looked directly into a neighbour’s garden, and planning permission required an opaque design to preserve privacy.
Balancing artistry with regulation, I explored glass types that could invite light while gently obscuring the view. I chose water glass, a beautifully textured material that captures and scatters light like ripples on a pond. Installed behind fire-rated safety glass to meet building and party-wall regulations, the finished piece met every technical requirement while transforming the room’s atmosphere.
By day, it floods the lounge with shifting patterns of light and shadow; by night, it glows softly from within. Even the neighbours — once the reason for privacy — now delight in seeing it from their garden.
