Light & Line: A Sgraffito Stained Glass Experience (Two Afternoons)
Step into the studio and enter a slower, more considered way of making where light, line and material come together in a centuries-old craft.
This two-afternoon experience introduces you to the refined art of sgraffito on glass: a process of painting and then gently removing, allowing light to emerge through your marks. Rather than drawing onto the surface, you will work by revealing and scratching back into layers of opaque glass paint to create form, movement and texture. The result is both expressive and precise, with a distinctive clarity that can only be achieved through this technique.
Working in a small, intimate group, you will be guided through the creation of your own stained glass panel. You will begin by selecting from a curated collection of designs inspired by the natural world each carefully developed to translate beautifully into glass. As you work, you will explore the subtle language of mark-making: how a single line can suggest softness, structure or light.
On the first afternoon, you will design and paint your glass panel. Your work will then be kiln-fired overnight in the studio, permanently fusing your design into the surface. This quiet transformation, where pigment becomes part of the glass itself, is at the heart of the process.
On the second afternoon, you will return to assemble your piece using traditional stained glass techniques. You will learn how to lead and solder your panel, bringing together glass, line and structure into a finished work.
By the end of the workshop, you will have created a 30cm × 30cm leaded stained glass panel a striking, hand-crafted piece designed to live with light, changing subtly throughout the day.
This is more than a workshop; it is an opportunity to engage with material, process and craft in a meaningful way. With only four participants per course, the experience is intentionally calm, focused and deeply personal.
