Learning Objectives – Make a Stained-Glass Panel (25cm Square)
This workshop is designed as a complete introduction to traditional stained-glass techniques, with a focus on leadwork (lead came construction) rather than copper foil methods. By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
Design and draw a simple stained-glass cartoon suitable for a 25cm square panel, understanding how to translate an idea into a practical glass design
Plan a design consisting of approximately 10–15 individual pieces of glass, recognising that simpler shapes and straight lines are more suitable for beginners than complex curves
Select appropriate glass for their piece, considering colour, texture and how light interacts with the finished panel
Confidently score and cut glass to shape using traditional techniques, even with no prior experience
Refine glass pieces using a grinder to achieve an accurate fit
Gain an introduction to traditional leadwork, understanding the structure and function of lead came
Cut, shape and assemble lead came to construct a stained-glass panel
Solder joints safely and effectively to secure the panel
Apply cement to strengthen and weatherproof the finished piece
Clean and polish the panel to a presentable standard
This course is taught at the level of a complete beginner to glass cutting and focuses on learning the full process from start to finish. While those with some prior experience may choose to attempt a slightly more detailed design, the emphasis is on developing core skills rather than producing a highly intricate panel within a single day.
